This Unit lays the foundation for children’s understanding of models and representation. Children will begin to understand that communication and understanding can occur through investigation and exploration of representations. For example, through comparing body models to their own bodies, children will begin to understand the commonality of basic parts of the body. This exploration of models and representation provides framework for understanding that models are useful representations of objects or items which may be difficult to observe. Children will begin to understand both the advantages and the limitations of models. In addition, this exploration will begin to show children the value of using models to test objects, providing a safe place to test theories and make observations.
Specific science concepts include: comparison, observation, measurement, body parts, generalization, invention, design and problem solving.
