During the Unit, students will use models to investigate safe habits on the playground, in the science lab, outside, and in the home.

Students will learn valuable ways to monitor themselves and their bodies. By creating models, students will learn the importance of safe habits such as wearing a seatbelt when in a car and wearing a helmet when on a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, or skates. After being introduced to absorption and reflection of light from the Sun, students will understand the benefits of an awareness of dark and light colors on a hot, sunny day.

Students will also discover the necessity of knowing their bodies’ limitations, especially when carrying loads up and down stairs. In a similar manner, students will explore the limitations of their field of view and will learn how to compensate for this by turning their heads and bodies to view things beside and behind them.
