During this Unit, students will conduct several investigations focused on the properties of compounds. By conducting experiments and investigating different variables, students will begin to draw conclusions concerning the relationship between the unique combination of elements in compounds and the properties of those compounds.
Students will observe and compare some of the different qualitative and quantitative properties of seven compounds. Students will also examine the solubility and saturation point of compounds and will determine how solubility can be affected by stirring and by increasing and decreasing temperatures of the solvent.
Through performing experiments, observing qualitative and quantitative properties, and participating in class discussions, students will begin to comprehend that compounds are found in the world around them. This Unit will promote students’ awareness of the properties of the compounds they encounter in their daily lives and encourage students’ independent investigation of those compounds. In doing so, this Unit will help build continuity between students’ laboratory investigations and real world experiences.
Conceptual Themes addressed in this Unit:
- Properties of Matter
- Changes and Reactions
