This Unit lays the foundation for children’s discussion and representation of observations, particularly those pertaining to quantity. Building on this, children will later come to realize the importance of observation and measurement of quantity during science experiments.
This Unit also provides a framework for developing number sense and understanding of quantity. Children who participate in these investigations may indicate an awareness and observation of numbers and a beginning sense of comparison. This awareness may later grow into an understanding of number representation, representations such as tables or graphs, and of other mathematical representations, such as mathematical symbols (+, – , ×, ÷).
Performing these Investigations will encourage children’s use of the terms more, less, most, least, same, none, and all. These explorations lay the foundation for children’s verbal recognition of numbers, children’s ability to compare quantity, and children’s verbal recognition of pattern.
Conceptual Themes addressed in this Unit:
- Changes and Reactions
- Properties of Matter
- Force and Motion
- Concentration
