During this Unit students will examine the relationship between cellular organization and tissue function. Students will learn that cells within a tissue replicate to form new cells by going through the cell cycle. They will examine the stages of the cell cycle in detail and build a model to represent how a cell moves through the four phases (G1, S, G2 and M). Students will investigate how the cell cycle is regulated. Finally, students will see that loss of regulation of the cell cycle can lead to cancer.
Conceptual Themes addressed in this Unit:
- Systems
- Structure and Function
- Cycles
